The Program
An Expanded Season
With such exponential growth of audiences, school groups and
summer bus tour patrons, the West Virginia Public Theatre will
expand its offerings from its new home.
Musical Theatre Academy
It will become a year-round presenting and producing organization.
The number of WVPT-based productions will increase from eight
to fourteen. Several concert performance tours will stop in Morgantown,
once the new Theatre is opened. There will be a Children's Theatre
Series. Performing arts organizations, choral groups and community-based
collaborators from throughout the region will have the use of
the facility for a variety of functions, both public and private.
The Academy of Musical Theatre
To entertain and to instruct. That has always been the dual
mission of the Arts.
To fulfill this mission, the new theatre will provide space
for the Academy of Musical Theatre. Currently, West Virginia
does not have a program that offers academic credit for training
in Musical Theatre. By harnessing the presence of some of the
country's most outstanding directors, choreographers, and designers,
the Academy will offer young West Virginians who aspire to Broadway
the opportunity to learn first-hand the rudiments of successful
Musical Theatre presentation. The black box theatre, rehearsal
space and computer lab facilities will enhance the Academy program
with exposure to technical theatre and stage management. The
work of Academy students will also help to build enthusiasm for
Musical Theatre among younger audiences by offering them an insight
into the career-building activities required of today's professionals.
Enrollment could expand to seminars for teachers in elementary
and secondary schools who want to add some theatrical fundamentals
to their skill set. The Academy could also host annual competitions
in Musical Theatre, allowing the area's young talent an opportunity
to gain early exposure in front of prominent directors and choreographers.
