WVPT Hopes To Be In New Home Summer 2008...

The design of the new WVPT home has evolved through several stages. The original concept was a stand-alone facility. It was determined that it would be substantially more efficient to move the theater under one roof with the proposed event center and parking garage. This would allow flexibility in programming. The facility could support intimate theater as well as shows supporting a much larger audience. This newest design concept uses a permanent stage along with corporate boxes and built-in digital sound and light systems, but creates flexibility in theater size by the use of state-of-the-art moveable walls and seating. Similar designs have been used in several new facilities throughout the nation.

The fiscal savings and program enhancements represented by this approach, rather than by three independent facilities, help deal with the double-digit increases in steel and other construction materials over the past few years.

Most importantly, the WVPT/Event Center will continue to provide performing arts in a facility with a state-of-the-art proscenium theater structure; appropriate support space and appropriate seating, including distinctive seating arrangements to serve corporate boxes. This multi purpose building will also be used for large conferences, trade shows, auto shows and several other events that presently the Waterfront Place Hotel cannot hold.

Currently, the WVPT/Event Center is on a fast track. We estimate beginning construction in late 2006 or early 2007. The goal is to open West Virginia Public Theatre's 2008 summer season in its new home in the Wharf District of Morgantown, West Virginia.
