Auditions for 2012 Summer Season

The West Virginia Public Theatre announces casting for its 28th season. WVPT hopes, pending AEA approval, to engage some Equity Guest Artist contracts. Other roles and ensemble will be filled by non-union actors.

WVPT intends to engage an ensemble of highly skilled actors who dance and sing exceedingly well. The ensemble track will be 9 to 5, Anything Goes and All Shook Up. The ensemble of 6 women and 6 men should have a strong background in tap.

The following regional auditions are scheduled.

Principal Roles:

VIOLET – 30s/40s, attractive, strong, ambitious woman. Sings, dances, and has strong comic skills

DORALEE – late 20s/30s, extremely sexy-- in a wholesome country singer way.

JUDY- Late 20s/30s, attractive, insecure. Sings well especially physical comedy.

FRANKLIN HART – Late 30s/40s, arrogant, self-absorbed, male chauvinist corporate 70s boss. Smarmy leading man. Sings well.

ROZ – late 30s, assistant to Hart--- Sings well with excellent comic abilities

 

Godspell

JESUS (Tenor High G#) —Very charismatic. Charming, with a gentle strength.

JOHN THE BAPTIST/JUDAS (Baritone E) —Jesus’s lieutenant and most ardent disciple. Charismatic, but in intellectual, revolutionary way.

JEFFREY (Tenor High D (falsetto)) — Very high energy. Impish and playful.

LAMAR (Tenor High A) —Sings “All Good Gifts”,

HERB (Baritone E ) The class clown. The guy who can do a hundred voices and imitations. Can be a little older or more heavy-set. Strong comic abilities.

ROBIN (Alto) — Sings “Day by Day”.

JOANNE (Soprano (High A in “Bless the Lord”, High C in “We Beseech Thee”) —

PEGGY (Alto) —Has an “earth mother” kind of warmth to her.

SONIA (Low Alto (D below middle C)) — Sassy, sexy and slightly cynical.

GILMER (Mezzo) — The female class clown.  Strong comedienne.

Reno Sweeney: 30s-early 40s, a chic, sexy, brassy nightclub singer turned evangelist, seeking a strong singer-actor-dancer, must dance extremely well (including tap) and have strong comedic skills.

Billy Crocker: mid-20s to mid-30s, a young broker. Excellent comic timing and a gorgeous tenor voice

Hope Harcourt: 20s, a beautiful debutante, elegant, and charming. She must sing and dance exceptionally well; soprano/mix.

Moonface Martin: 40s+, a hapless gangster, an exceptional comedic actor who sings.

Lord Evelyn Oakleigh: 40s, a wealthy, often bumbling, Englishman. Excellent British dialect and, strong comedic skills. Sings.

Erma: 20s-30s, Moonface’s sidekick. Brassy, and flirty. An excellent actor-singer-comedienne with dance.

Evangeline Harcourt: 50s+, Hope’s haughty, overbearing mother, foolish, but also cold and calculating. A comedic actress who sings and dances well.

Elisha Whitney: 50s+, Wall Street tycoon and Billy’s boss, an upper class blow hard. Sings.

Captain: 40s+, a military man and captain of the ship, mature and authoritative. Sings,

Purser: 30s, the captain’s nervous lackey, must sing and dance well, tap skills a plus; 

Luke and John: two males, 20s-30s, of Asian descent, with strong comedic skills, who sing well, must tap Luke is a mischievous gambler, while John is a timid worrier.

 

The Marvelous Wonderettes

CINDY LOU: (late 20s-early 30s) The prettiest girl at Springfield High. She is certain she will be named Prom Queen and works hard to make things go her way. During the course of the prom and reunion, she learns the lessons of true love and loss. MEZZO SOPRANO, sings lead line on many songs. Some of the songs she sings are "Allegheny Moon," "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Maybe."   

MISSY: (late 20s-early 30s) The over-achiever of the group. Officer in most of the school's clubs, in charge of the prom decorations and the organizer of the reunion. SOPRANO--WIDE RANGE, FLOATS VERY HIGH VOCALS AND BELTS THROUGHOUT THE SHOW. Some of the songs she sings are "Secret Love," "You Don't Own Me" and "Wedding Bell Blues."   

BETTY JEAN: (late 20s-early 30s) The slightly put-upon class clown, always vying for attention. A tomboy, she loves Johnny, her high school crush, with all her soul. ALTO WITH A STRONG LOW RANGE. Some of the songs she sings are "Lipstick on Your Collar," "I Only Want To Be With You" and "It's My Party."   

SUZY: (late 20s-early 30s) She is the happy-go-lucky one of the group. Always smiling and giggling, nothing ever seems to bother her and is completely surprised when an honor comes her way. MEZZO ALTO, BOTH SIMPLE AND SOUL VOICE. Some of the songs she sings are "Stupid Cupid," "Hold Me, Thrill Me and "Rescue Me." 

The Marvelous Wonderettes features “girl group” hit music of the 1950’s and 60’s.

 

All Shook Up

NATALIE HALLER - A young woman mechanic. She's much more at home in greasy overalls than a dress.

CHAD - A great-lookin', motorcyclin', guitar-playin', leather-jacketed roustabout.

JIM HALLER - Natalie's widowed father. Middle-aged and messy, he still longs for his wife.

SYLVIA - The no-nonsense, African American owner of SYLVIA'S HONKY-TONK.

LORRAINE - Sylvia's teenage daughter. Pretty, smart and a total romantic.

DENNIS - An awkward young man. He aspires to be a dentist.

MISS SANDRA - The beautiful, intellectual caretaker of the town's museum.

MAYOR MATILDA HYDE - The town's very conservative mayor.

DEAN HYDE - Matilda's teenage son. He has spent his youth at military boarding schools and he has never disobeyed his mother.

SHERIFF EARL - The law in town and a man of not many words. He loyally follows the Mayor wherever she goes.

All Shook Up is an all singing, all dancing musical based on the hit songs of Elvis Presley and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night

 

Ring of Fire- The Johnny Cash Musical

Closes: August 5

Requires 8 gifted singers (4 men and 4 women) to perform the music of Johnny Cash.  These singers should be highly skilled in style of Country Music. Any skills on Guitar, keyboards, harmonica or fiddle is a plus.
